Sir Martin Sorrell, Group CEO of multinational advertising and PR conglomerate, WPP, was, in 2015, ranked the most influential leader in international marketing and media by M&M Global and this year he was voted the most respected CEO in the UK.
WPP has grown through acquisition over the past 30 years to corner a third of its market, but how does Sorrell plan to navigate today’s volatile global economy and what does he expect from the future?
Following his presentation at AMBA’s Global Conference in Venice, AMBA chief executive, Andrew Main Wilson, spoke to him to find out.
Sorrell believes that explaining structural and strategic change internally is a huge challenge for business leaders. He said: ‘Global is becoming more and more important; local is becoming more and more important… However, he was clear about the direction in which the company is going. ‘We have four strategic goals,’ he says. ‘Horizontality, growth, digital and data investment management. We are a company that has grown by acquisition. We wanted to build a major marketing services company and we had to do it by acquisition – not by organic growth.
